The Next Innovation in Safety: Building a Better Bullet Box
May 16 2023 – Hilary Dyer
Any firearms professional knows the importance of safety rule #1: Never let the muzzle cover anything you’re not willing to destroy. Or, stated another way, always keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction.
The trouble is, safe directions aren’t always easy to come by in a crowded shop, at a range behind the firing line, in a gunsmith’s office, or in other locations where people are moving about. Of course, doing any sort of work on or manipulating of a firearm off the line requires the gun to be cleared for safety, making a safe direction even more vital.
Gunsmiths, military facilities, law enforcement stations and other locations have traditionally solved this problem by creating their own safe direction using a weapons clearing box, and it’s an excellent solution. You might have one at your facility already. The most common is probably a bucket or barrel full of sand, but commercially sold boxes are also available.
These are effective, but they’re not without their own set of problems. The barrel of sand, while inexpensive, is heavy and cumbersome at best. It’s big, bulky and difficult to move, as are most of the options currently on the market. And with all of them, you have to be mindful of their caliber rating — not all boxes are safe for all calibers.
White Horse Defense set out to build a better bullet box, and the result is an innovation in safety as well as convenience: The military-grade Boss Box 50. Designed to stop two .50-caliber armor-piercing rounds and hundreds of rounds from 7.62, 5.56, .308 Win., 9mm, .45 ACP and even 00 buck shot, it’s got a superior caliber rating than just about anything else on the market, so you’ll never have to wonder if your safe direction is truly safe enough — no matter what gun you’re clearing. It’s so safe, in fact, that it exceeds UL 752 level 10, the highest level of ballistic resistance the Underwriter’s Laboratory recognizes.
The other consideration with traditional weapons clearing boxes is that their size and weight typically limits them to a single location. If you have a regular need to show clear in different places, you’ve got to purchase multiple boxes or sand barrels. You might not have even considered that being able to easily move your clearing box would be extremely convenient, but think about it: What if you could buy a single box and move it from the gunsmith’s shop to the range to the sales counter, depending on what’s on the schedule for that day?
The Boss Box 50 solves the portability and convenience problem in two ways. First, it’s small and lightweight, clocking in at about 28 pounds and measuring just 6 x 6 x 9 inches. Second, it can be mounted in a mobile configuration with locking wheel casters — just wheel it around wherever you need it, then lock it into place until it’s time to move it again. If you don’t want it to be mobile, mount it on a table or even a wall. If you want it to be extremely portable, you can even mount it in a vehicle. It’s small and sleek enough to fit unobtrusively in a corner or to be easily wheeled through hallways and into small spaces. And did we mention it’s 100% made in the USA?
White Horse Defense says they are committed to delivering the highest-caliber, innovative products with an emphasis on research and advancement, and given the quality, caliber rating, portability, and convenience of the Boss Box 50, it’s not hard to see that they’re fulfilling that mission by building the proverbial “better mousetrap.” There are also three other models available in the Boss Box line so you can find the box that works best for your shop’s particular needs.
You might not have even realized the benefits that a superior weapon clearing system can offer your facility, but that old barrel of sand belongs in the past. The Boss Box 50’s innovative approach to safety is an affordable but major upgrade that offers a safe direction anywhere you need one.
